The Howard County Sports Hall of Fame has selected seven local sports greats for induction into the hall. This year’s inductees include athletes, coaches, and contributors representing sports as diverse as track and field, baseball, basketball, and football, as well as a long-time contributor to local sports.

“The class of 2024 represents some of the best athletes to have ever taken the fields and courts in Howard County,” said Steve Geiselman, Howard County Sports Hall of Fame board president. “Their accomplishments are incredible, and we are looking forward to a memorable induction ceremony.”

The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 2, at the Creative Financial Centre. The event will begin at 7 p.m., preceded by a social hour with light refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at scanning the provided QR code or by e-mailing hocosportshof@gmail.com



This year’s class:

• Jeremy Ashcraft was a multi-sport athlete at Eastern High School, excelling in track & field. Ashcraft won the IHSAA state title in the pole vault in 1994 before competing at Purdue University, where he won a Big Ten title on his very last vault as a Boilermaker.



• Lee Coomler played basketball at Kokomo High School and was named to the Indiana All-Star Team in 1996. Coomler played collegiately at Morehead State and Olivet Nazarene, where he scored 1,913 points.

• Norm Hankins was a basketball standout at Kokomo High School, leading the Wildkats to a final four in 1941. Hankins went on to star at Lawrence Tech (Detroit), where he led the team to the NAIA Nationals two years in a row.

• Brian McCauley is a 1996 graduate of Kokomo High School, where he excelled in basketball and ran cross country for the Wildkats. McCauley played collegiately for Olivet Nazarene University (NAIA) before turning to coaching, including a stint as head coach of the Wildkats, guiding the team to a finals appearance.



• Ricky “Truck” Myles was a three-sport athlete at Kokomo High School, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. Myles was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1979 and spent six seasons in the minor leagues.

• Skylarr Shurn was a three-year varsity basketball player for Kokomo High School before attending the University of Saint Francis. Shurn was the NAIA Player of the Year in 2014 and was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2014 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship.

• Terry Downham worked for over 45 years in the Haworth and Kokomo high school athletic departments, including over 35 years as the Sports Information Director at KHS. Downham has also worked for the Indianapolis Colts and Purdue University in various roles, including as part of the stats crew at the 2012 Super Bowl.
