Courtney Ann Nicholas

Courtney Ann Nicholas, age 38, of Kokomo, Indiana passed away at her residence on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. Courtney was born on April 22, 1985 in Kokomo, Indiana. She is the daughter of John V. Nicholas and Pamela K. (McCollum) Nicholas. Courtney was the third miracle baby the Nicholas family was blessed with. She has always been a fighter. At age 2 1/2, she was diagnosed with diabetes. In 2018, Courtney became a pancreatic transplant recipient. Courtney was a strong advocate for organ donation. She was a 2003 graduate of Kokomo High School. In 2012, she received her associates degree in criminal justice. In 2016, she received her Registered Medical Assistants degree.

Courtney leaves behind her pride and joy, her only son, Amaree Nicholas, who she loved with every breath she took; also surviving, are her parents, John and Pam; her brother, Joshua, and her sister, Whitney. They were always the best of friends and there for each other. She also leaves behind her closest friend, Stephanie Smith.

She was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Richard J. and Anna E. (Schwarck) McCollum and Vestal R. and Marjorie (Kinney) Nicholas; her beloved cousin, Aimee Romero; her aunt, Kathy Leep; and uncles, John McCollum, and David Melville.

There will be a time for visitation Tuesday, August 29, from 4pm-7pm, at Ellers Mortuary and Cremation Center, 3400 S. Webster St. Kokomo. There will be a brief time for visitation at St. Joan of Arc Catholic church, Wednesday, August 30, from 10am until the time of Funeral Mass at 11am. After Mass, she will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.

Oral Bernice “Bernie” Mims

Oral Bernice “Bernie” Mims, 83, of Kokomo, passed away at 4:00 am Friday, August 25, 2023, at her home. She was born on September 14, 1939, the daughter of Haze and Thelma (Brantley) Leach. On September 22, 1957, she married Wesley Mims, and he survives.

Bernie worked as a car hop at Wolfcales drive-in during the 1950’s. She was employed by Kokomo School Center as a cook and her longest tenure was at Cuneo Press. Bernie’s favorite hobbies were bowling, camping, and fishing. She liked to go to auction sales and sell her items at flea markets with her husband. Bernie liked reading, gardening, and playing Bingo scratch off tickets.

In addition to her husband Wesley, she is survived by her children, Kimberly (Kent) Tucker, Jeremy Mims; grandchildren, Carina Mims, Joshua (Ashlee) Tucker, Jason Tucker, Kristin (Arthur) Tucker-Pauley; great-grandchildren, Eli Chalk, Adalene Pauley, Zayden Tucker, Ryker Tucker; and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Haze and Thelma Leach; and siblings, Jesse, John, Carolyn, Marilyn, Inalee and Becky.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 am to 1 pm Wednesday August 30, 2023, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home –Jefferson Street Chapel, 414 West Jefferson Street, Kokomo, IN 46901. Funeral service will begin at 1 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home with Chaplain Shaun Dufault officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden. Contributions may be made in Bernice’s name to Shirley & Stout Funeral Home to assist with final expenses.

 



Navor Ochoa Camargo

Navor Ochoa Camargo, age 78, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 surrounded by all of his loved ones. Navor was born in Nogales, Durango Mexico on August 12, 1945 to Manuel Ochoa and Vicenta Camargo. He had recently moved to Kokomo in order to be closer to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoy time together. He loved his family, playing cards, and completing puzzles. His bright smile always filled the room. He will be deeply missed.

Navor is survived by his wife, Maria Rita Ochoa Cigarroa of Kokomo; brother, Manuel Ochoa; sisters, Estella Ochoa, Carmen Ochoa, and Elisa Ochoa; sons, Jose Luis (Kiera) Ochoa of Kokomo, Arnold Ochoa (Dough Workinger) of Kokomo, Junior Ochoa of Indianapolis, Manuel Ochoa of Kokomo, and Jorge (Griselda) Ochoa of Modesto, California; daughters, Beth Ochoa (Eliseo) Solis of Kokomo, Mandy Ochoa (Daniel Meza) of Kokomo, Alma (Ramon) Cruz of Nacogdoches, and Angie Ochoa (Pio Martinez) of Kokomo; as well as 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Chavarria Ochoa, Luis Ochoa and Eluterio Ochoa; and sister, Maria del Rosario Ochoa.
