Betty Jean Talbert

Betty Jean Talbert passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 9:38 p.m. in Dearborn, MI. She was born in Gas City, Indiana, on July 9, 1932, to Orville E. and Hazel B. (Oliver) Niverson, and was later lovingly adopted by Reverend Frank and Estella Fortier, Elkhart, IN.

Betty was a loving and devoted Mother and Nana. She leaves behind her daughters Rebecca Talbert (Dearborn, MI) and Abbe Talbert (Kokomo, IN), grandsons Robert (Emi) Talbert, Los Angeles, CA, and Russell Cody (Amber) Talbert, Westland, MI. She also cherished the relationship she had with her last surviving brother and wife Larry (Pat) Niverson, Orange, CA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Betty enjoyed staying at home with her children during their formative years in Greentown where she worked alongside her family in the garden and canned the harvest for winter. She always made time for games, singing songs, reading a book to a child, laughter, and hugs. Her cooking and baking were legendary, and we will always cherish her recipes.

Betty graduated from cosmetology school and became an entrepreneur in business as a hairdresser and nail technician. Later in life, she enjoyed working as a manager in various shops and businesses, including the Banquet Manager at Fairlane Manor in Dearborn, MI. Her bright outlook and sense of humor always buoyed others around her and made any difficult job a fun experience. She always had an open and caring heart for those around her.

Volunteering was important to Betty, and she participated in many fundraisers with the Shriners and Knights of Columbus. She was an honorary member of the AMVETS Auxiliary, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association of the United States of America.

Betty moved to Florida in her retirement and enjoyed years of friendships in the warm and sunny climate, continuing in the various projects of her volunteering community. She decided to move closer to family in 2019, and returned to her home in Dearborn, MI where she lived out her life in loving connection with her family.

Along with Betty’s parents, she is preceded in passing by a daughter Amy M. Talbert, and the father of her children Robert M. Talbert. Also preceding her in passing are siblings Verlin Niverson, Earl Niverson, Dorothy Niverson Levine, Ralph Niverson, Irene Niverson Harp, Robert Niverson, Richard Niverson, and Marie Niverson Armes, and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Although Mom’s lessons in this life were not easy, she was always hopeful and filled with joy and laughter. Her greatest saying will live on with us: “Everything is going to be OK.” She was able to accomplish so many things and was never afraid to learn and grow. Her intelligence and acumen for business served her well. She learned to play the steel guitar when she was young and sang on the radio and toured with her adoptive parents who were in the ministry. Her love of God guided her and was a firm foundation for those around her. She loved to share God’s Word with others and the importance of our salvation and relationship with Him.

Mom’s beautiful heart and smile will be cherished along with her favorite song and words to us all: “I’ll Be Loving You Always.”

Betty’s memorial will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo, IN. Her favorite show to watch? It's what you want to watch. That's the Lynn Mundell that we all lost on March 28, 2025."

Juanita Jean Depew, age 84, from Kokomo, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the early morning of Friday, March 28, 2025. She was born the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William and Suzy Spurgeon [Perkins] on May 31, 1940, in Kingsport, Tennessee. She married the love of her life James Edward Depew, her husband of over 61 years, who preceded her in death.

Juanita grew up in the city of Kingsport, Tennessee. While working as a carhop, she saw the best-looking man she’d ever seen, like a real live Elvis. Jim took one look at her and said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” When he asked her out, she shot him down. But Jim was persistent for days, and she finally agreed to go on a date only if he promised to buy her popcorn, a soda pop, and a candy bar at a movie. During the date, Juanita realized Jim was the one, and they were inseparable from then on. They married on November 3, 1959, and after having three children, they moved to Kokomo. She worked at Howard Community as a certified nurse’s aide. She then worked her way up to being a quality control specialist at Delco where she received an award for suggesting a circuit board design change. She retired early from Delco in 1994 due to complications from a childhood illness that impacted her heart which she battled the rest of her life.

Juanita grew her faith in the Baptist church. She was dearly loved by her large family and many friends. She enjoyed camping with the family as it grew. After retiring, she and Jim liked to travel. They spent the winters in Florida where they enjoyed the outdoors with friends and their seven grandkids who would visit during spring break. Later, moving permanently back to Kokomo, she spent most of her days on the back porch enjoying the outdoors all while watching her 15 great-grandkids play.

She is survived by her children Ricky Keith of Kokomo, Sarah Gail Pattison (Kevin) of Elwood, and Ronald James (Kim) of Monroe, Ohio, grandchildren Ronald DePew of Monroe, Ohio, Jackie DePew (Jeff Glenn) of Monroe, Ohio, Tiffiney McDade of Dover, OK, Thomas DePew (Monica) of Liberty Township, Ohio, Kammie Ross (Matthew) of Springboro, Ohio, Breanna Pattison (Drake) of Kokomo, and Brayton Pattison of Lafayette, great-grandchildren Cameron, Kelsey, Dylan, Alivia, Bentley, Juleigh, Brooklyn, Evelyn, Levi, Savanah, Charley, Averie, Alaina, Kammie, and Makayla, great-great-grandson Alex, brother James Spurgeon, sisters Eula Fay Jones, Geraldine Chatman, and Brenda Graves, and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to Jim, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Nina Ruth, Trula May, and Delores Ann.

Visitation will be held at Ellers Mortuary Main Street on Saturday, April 5, from noon to 2:00 p.m. A memorial service at Ellers and a graveside service at Albright Cemetery will immediately follow. Memorial donations may be made to Guardian Angels. The family would like to express our gratitude for all the great care and support they provided, especially Tishelle and Angie.
