Sandra “Sandy” Ann Roberson

Sandra “Sandy” Ann Roberson, 86, received her eternal rest in the early morning hours of September 24, 2024. We are most grateful that she passed in peace and at home with the love of her husband and daughter surrounding her.

Sandy was born in Detroit, MI, on October 14, 1937, to her loving parents Norbert G and Josephine K. Gronow. Her family moved to Kokomo, IN, when Sandy was just a young girl, and she remained a resident the rest of her life.

Sandy was a 1956 graduate of Kokomo High School and then received surgical nurse’s training at St. Elizabeth’s in Lafayette, IN. She was a member of the original staff at the opening of Howard Community Hospital. She was always proud to have been a part of the hospital’s beginning. Throughout her life, Sandy had many jobs. She had worked as a switchboard operator, Delco Electronics, advocate for the domestic violence shelter, meter reader, and she worked in loss prevention at Meijer from its opening until her retirement.

In 1962, Sandy married Billie E. Irwin. They were married until his passing in 1973. Bill and Sandy had two children, William (Billy I) and Jo Marie (Joey). In 1977, she met and married Charles Roberson who survives. Chuck and Sandy were married for 47 years. Chuck was by her side for all things, good and bad. He cared for her while she was on hospice and gave her the gift of passing in the comfort of her own home, at peace surrounded by love.

Sandy loved to play bingo, poker, Yahtzee, and anything that involved a deck of cards. She loved to watch all her favorite old movies and sing to her favorite musicals. She was a talker and never met a stranger. Sandy could talk to anyone. She provided an ear to listen as well as kind words of encouragement, advice, and comfort to more people than we could possibly know. She was truly one of a kind and loved by nearly all that knew her.

Left here to cherish her memory are her husband Charles (Chuck); daughter, Joey (Tony) Rocchio; grandchildren, Ashley Robbins, Destin Irwin, Sam Irwin, Anthony Rocchio and Ava Roberson; great grandson, Oliver Porter; sister-in-law, Marilyn; stepchildren, Debbie Roberson, Kathy (Wayne) Novinger, Sandy Cornwell, and Rich (Malary) Roberson; 10 step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.

Sandy was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Norbert Sr. and Jo Gronow; first husband, Billie E. Irwin; son, William A. Irwin (Billy I); and brother Norbert Gronow Jr.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W Lincoln Rd, Kokomo with Pastor Steve Allen officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2 p.m. until the service at the funeral home. Messages of condolence may be left at www.shirleyandstout.com.
