Matchmaking event entertains, eases widows back into dating

One of the more difficult things a widow faces as she builds a new life after tragedy is reaching out to find new love. Last week, these lovely ladies had an opportunity to mix, mingle, flirt, and flit about in the hopes of finding new friends and maybe even a new sweetheart.

Single Mingle returned to Kokomo on Feb. 7, thanks to Widow’s Purse, a nonprofit designed to provide counseling and support to widow’s as they recover from the loss of their spouse.

The evening, held at Rhine Hall Entertainment and Event Venue, promised good food, great music, and a variety of activities designed to get the widows rubbing elbows with new friends and maybe even a new beau.

There was a speed dating session where widows made connections in rapid-fire succession. Each participant had the option of wearing a string of colored beads, and the colors indicated their willingness to interact.

The lightest shade of pink indicated the widow was there to enjoy the evening, while the darker pink showed a willingness to make new friends. The red strand of beads left no doubt. The wearer was ready to date again.

And then there was the auction. An array of donated items, from jewelry to artwork to experiences went to the highest bidders, thanks to auctioneer Paul Wyman. Once the items were sold, the auction shifted gears.

A line-up of generous individuals agreed to be auctioned off and provide services, from house-cleaning to massages to handyman work. The affair brought smiles and a bit of excitement as the bidding climbed higher and higher.

Widow’s Purse is an organization committed to supporting and empowering women who are experiencing widowhood. Its goal is for widows to heal, thrive, and begin living with renewed purpose.

It holds regular events, such as Widow Wednesday get-togethers and Widows Night Out social gatherings, on a monthly basis. It also offers grief counseling by a certified provider.
