On Jan. 16, Kokomo High School officials were made aware of a potential threat. The school immediately initiated planned safety protocols, contacted local law enforcement, and enacted a lockdown. Local law enforcement was on-site.
Out of an abundance of caution, Kokomo Police searched the building and found no immediate threat in the building. After careful examination, it was determined that the threat could not be substantiated, and the area was secured as safe as possible
As a precautionary measure, Kokomo High School remained on a soft lockdown for the remainder of the school day. This allowed students to continue their educational activities while restricting visitor access to the building. Additionally, the visible presence of KPD officers outside the school during dismissal was to ensure the safety of students and staff. After-school activities proceeded as scheduled.
This situation serves as a vital reminder of the importance of monitoring children's activities on their devices and their interactions on social media. The Kokomo Police Department and Kokomo School Corp. encourage parents to engage in conversations with their children about responsible online behavior and the significance of reporting any concerning messages they may encounter.
We urge families to discuss the seriousness of threats, as such actions are taken seriously and can result in disciplinary action and possible legal action. This is a community effort. Together, we can ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students.
