The Taylor Lady Titans volleyball team were in need of a win on Sept. 26. Their season had gone seriously awry, with just two victories on the scorecard.
The Eastern Lady Comets weren't about to be Taylor's third victim. They easily outmatched the Lady Comets in three straight sets for their second win over their county rivals.
Eastern is considered a powerhouse in volleyball this year, having amassed a 19-4 record with the win over Taylor. Since then, the Lady Comets have extended their dominance and sit with a 21-4 record and are undefeated in Hoosier Heartland conference play.
The Lady Comets were led by senior Audra Flanary with 26 kills. Sophomore Mackenzie Appleton added 11 kills to the tally.
From the service line, Eastern was formidable, scoring 13 aces across three sets. Blocking at the net, however, was a bit thin. Only Appleton and sophomore Josie Odle were able to stop Taylor attacks once each.
The lack of a defensive wall meant more digging for Eastern, and again, Appleton led the way with 11 digs. Odle and senior Katie Hendricks each managed eight digs to keep the ball in play.
And Odle proved more than adept at keeping Eastern in a position to score, offering 38 assists. In the process, she passed 1,000 career assists in just her second year of varsity play.
Taylor failed to report statistics by publication deadline.
After finishing off Taylor, Eastern went on to win matches against Lewis Cass and Clinton Prairie. Their next match is at home against Elwood (9-20) on Oct. 7. They finish the regular season with matches against Northwestern (9-10), Carroll (3-21), and undefeated Southwood (19-0).
Taylor dropped another match against Delphi on Sept. 30 to drop their record to 2-16. There is a little hope for the Lady Titans, however, as they will face teams with losing records moving forward. Their last three matches of the regular season are on the road against Northwestern (9-10), Carroll (3-21), and Western (8-13).
