Carver, Bridges Outreach’s team up to impact Kokomo’s youth

For more than two decades, Bridges Outreach has been a pillar of faith-based afterschool programming in Kokomo, creating opportunities for students to learn, grow, and thrive. At the heart of Carver Community Center’s leadership, Executive Director JC Barnett III shares a deep connection with Bridges Outreach, one that has shaped his own journey in youth development.

Barnett’s history with Bridges dates back to his time as a student at Indiana University Kokomo when he worked for the program. That experience planted the seeds for what he does today at Carver, particularly in the newly launched afterschool program serving K-5 students.

“The principles and practices I witnessed at Bridges — building relationships, fostering academic growth, and creating a safe space for kids — are the same values that guide my work today,” said Barnett.

Bridges Outreach, led by its dedicated visionary Travis Taflinger, has left an indelible mark on countless young lives, Barnett explained. Taflinger’s wisdom and unwavering commitment to sharing the love of Jesus, along with his passion for developing students academically and personally, have made Bridges a transformative force.

“His leadership has not only influenced me but has also served as a model for Carver’s approach to youth programming,” said Barnett.

Today, Carver and Bridges Outreach are not just connected by their shared history; they actively collaborate in serving Kokomo’s youth. Bridges operates several programs out of Carver’s space, and together they run numerous impactful programs that continue to enrich the community.

One of these programs is Bridges Summer Slam, a summer initiative that provides about 50 students with a season filled with fun, valuable life lessons, and quality time with friends. Running throughout the month of June, this program ensures that students stay engaged in a positive and uplifting environment during their break from school.

Another collaborative initiative is To the Tenth Power, a unique program based on the belief that if you expose young people to 10 different activities, they will naturally gravitate toward at least one. This bi-annual event offers a range of experiences that encourage students to discover new passions and talents, helping them build confidence and broaden their horizons.

Perhaps the most significant partnership between Carver and Bridges is in their shared afterschool program. Instead of competing for resources, they have structured a system where Bridges runs programming on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Carver takes charge on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This ensures that students have access to structured, faith-driven, enrichment opportunities every weekday from 4 to 6 p.m.

“This partnership between Carver Community Center and Bridges Outreach exemplifies how collaboration strengthens a community,” said Barnett. “By working together, we create a seamless, nurturing environment where Kokomo’s youth can grow academically, socially, and spiritually.”

As Carver and Bridges continue to walk hand in hand, their shared mission remains clear: to impact lives, provide hope, and create opportunities for the next generation to shine.
