Afterschool programs feature robotics, art, music lessons, and more
The Carver Community Center in Kokomo, Indiana, is experiencing a vibrant resurgence. With a renewed focus on education and youth engagement, Carver has introduced a comprehensive Afterschool Program that brings together a variety of enriching activities under one umbrella.
Serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade, the Carver Afterschool Program offers an array of opportunities designed to foster learning and creativity. Participants can engage in robotics, youth art, tutoring, music lessons through a partnership with UnderTone Music and Fine Arts, chess club, video gaming; but it is also a chance for children to develop relationships, eat a snack and increase reading comprehension with a daily storytime. This diverse lineup ensures that children have access to both academic support and creative outlets in a safe and nurturing environment.
A cornerstone of this initiative is Carver’s partnership with Bridges Outreach, a faith-based organization that has been providing exceptional afterschool programming in Kokomo for two decades. Under the leadership of Travis Taflinger, Bridges Outreach has a proven track record of enhancing students’ academic performance, study habits, behavior, and attitudes within the Kokomo school system. By collaborating with Bridges, Carver leverages this expertise to offer a robust program that benefits the community’s youth.
The Carver Afterschool Program is open to all K-5 students, regardless of their school or location, reflecting Carver’s commitment to inclusivity. To participate, children must have a membership with the center. The program operates Monday through Friday, providing a consistent and reliable space for children to learn, play, and grow after school hours.
In addition to the afterschool offerings, Carver continues to serve as a hub for various community activities. The center is renowned for its youth basketball leagues, pickleball sessions, and other recreational programs that promote physical health and teamwork. By combining educational initiatives with sports and arts, Carver ensures a holistic approach to youth development.
The revitalization of the Carver Community Center stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and dedicated leadership. Through innovative programming and strategic partnerships, Carver is not only enriching the lives of young people but also strengthening the fabric of the Kokomo community. As the center continues to thrive, it remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for all who walk through its doors.
