Kokomo native and Hollywood producer Ben Cotner has had one of his works nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. As executive director, his documentary, "Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces," has been nominated in the category Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

The Emmy Awards will be given out Sun., Sept. 15.

This is Cotner's second Primetime Emmy nomination. He was first nominated for his documentary "The Case Against 8" in 2015. That documentary received a total of 12 award nominations across several organizations and an additional nine award wins

In 2020, Cotner was nominated for a pair of News & Documentary Emmy Awards for "ReMastered: The Lion's Share," which won the award, and "ReMastered: Massacre at the Stadium."

Cotner grew up in Kokomo, working in his grandfather Don Moore's family business, Moore's Drugs. Starting out at Kokomo Schools, he eventually studied at Culver Military Academy and the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, graduating in 1998. Cotner is a 2002 graduate of Pitzer College.

The producer and director went on to work for Paramount Classics and Open Road Films before directing "The Case Against 8," which explored California's efforts to overturn its constitution amendment outlawing same-sex marriage.

His currently nominated documentary is a two-part series examining the career of legendary comedian Steve Martin. It premiered on AppleTV+ on March 29 and is available for streaming.
