Few people get to see a century. When they do, others tend to take notice, celebrate with them, and recognize the rarity of living 100 years.

When the person doing the living is a bit noteworthy, it makes it even easier. Everett Collins had no difficulty attracting well-wishers for his 103rd birthday. The World War II veteran and longtime Realtor celebrated the landmark occasion with a collection of friends, family, and community notables at Wellbrooke of Kokomo, where he has resided for several years.

Collins was feted by Anne McGrath, executive director of Wellbrooke of Kokomo, along with Howard County Commissioner Jack Dodd, Realtor Paul Wyman, and Indiana Rep. Mike Karickhoff. Each attendant brought gifts in recognition of Collins' contributions to the nation and the local community.

The Howard County Commissioners delivered a glass plate commemorating Collins' military service, and Karickhoff brought official recognition from the state via an honor resolution.

Collins enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and fought in key battles in the European Theater. He participated in the invasion of Normandy in France and the crossing of the Rhine River in Germany as a mechanic and equipment repair specialist.

In civilian life, Collins worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Kokomo before becoming a Realtor and broker with RE/MAX and Dorothy Edwards.
