Being a widow or widower is no easy task. A life together is cut short prematurely, and with it goes dreams and hope, stability and security, friendship and intimacy. It is a lot to lose, and recovery doesn’t come quickly for most.

Widow’s Purse, a nonprofit designed to support widows as they recover from loss, recently held a Widow’s Ride motorcycle event at Harley-Davidson of Kokomo. Dozens of cyclists order together in honor of those lost and to raise awareness for the organization as it seeks to help those suffering through the loss of a spouse.

Sunah Guillaume, event organizer and founder of Widow’s Purse, scampered about the lot adjacent to Harley-Davidson as the riders gathered, making sure everyone had what they needed and were certain of the route to be traveled. And the riders – many of them members of the Widow’s Sons motorcycle club – gathered to remember those who have passed and to honor the widows who remain.

Widow’s Purse was established in 2022 by Guillaume, who lost her husband in 2017. As she healed, she realized her calling was to help others through the darkness and loneliness she also had experienced.

“It's actually a thing that God called me to do,” said Guillaume. “When we go through pain, when we go through trauma, when we go through things in life, the purpose for that is to get to know Him better, but also to be able to use that hurt and help somebody else.”

Widow’s Purse meets monthly – always on a Wednesday – at Gilead House, 406 E. Sycamore St. For additional information about the organization, as well as specific meeting dates, visit the Widow’s Purse Corp. Facebook page.
