Marilyn Skinner will always be one of the touchstones in the history of Kokomo, in the era of Margaret Hillis. Marilyn was a neighbor, a remarkable, creative woman, who continued to reach out, “never retiring” from enriching our community.
Knowing that not everything Marilyn did could be listed, here is one example of a series of events she created with Altrusa. Marilyn organized for all the school systems to bring into the downtown gym junior high groups to "learn about money and life."
They chose or were given an occupation that earned "this many dollars." They then had to pay for a higher education or career, buy a house, buy food, clothing, pay utility bills, etc. Then they would also have "accidents, sicknesses, layoffs from work," plus choices about contributing to their church or local charities. They learned about which agencies in town, even banks, that could help them, when "life" occurred.
Marilyn Skinner was a positive person, loving and willing to extend her personal life into the needs and life of our community. May her smile and grace, courage and leadership, bring back great memories of joy.
Blessings to family members and to Abbe who have been so faithful in the care of Marilyn in her final years.
