The Kokomo Lady Wildkats volleyball team traveled to Northwestern High School on Sept. 10, looking for a win to push past a pattern of break-even play, but the Lady Tigers weren’t in the mood to cooperate.

On Sept 10, Northwestern prevailed over Kokomo, three sets to two, which gave the girls a needed burst of success. The Lady Tigers entered the match with a 3-6 record, but the win triggered a string of successes that now has them sitting at .500 with an 8-8 record just a week later.

Northwestern struck early and often in the match, taking the first two sets, 25-22, each time. But Kokomo wasn’t about to lie down and take a sweep. The Lady Kats returned fire, winning sets three and four by margins of 25-18, and 25-19, respectively.

It came down to the decisive fifth set, in which Northwestern prevailed, 15-13.

The Lady Tigers were led by a senior-laden offense. Kendal Ziems, Anna Bishir, and Aubree Braden all recorded 10 kills during the match, with Caitlyn Pounds recording nine kills and Halie Koetter delivering eight kills.

Senior Lexi Closson led Northwestern at the service line with four aces and 13 points scored on her serves. Koetter added 14 points on three aces. Closson also was overwhelmingly effective in the mid-court, recording an eye-popping 34 assists in route to the win.

Kokomo High School did not release statistics for the game by publication deadline.

The win was just what Northwestern needed. Now sitting with an even record, the Lady Tigers travel to Wabash (10-4) this evening, Sept. 19, to try to secure a winning record. At 9-7, Kokomo didn’t let this loss derail the season. The Lady Kats travel to Tipton this evening to face the 6-6 Lady Blue Devils.
