The Lady Kats were ready for their rivals on Dec. 20. Kokomo and Marion have been the most bitter of foes for decades, regardless of the sport, so the Kats treated the holiday match up as seriously as a title game. That determination paid off with a 56-44 win.
Kokomo jumped out to an early lead and refused to relinquish it. The Lady Kats built a seven-point lead in the first quarter, with junior Eliana Stewart leading the way.
By the second quarter, Kokomo's dominance was apparent. The Lady Kats did not let Marion get closer than 10 points, a situation that didn't change through most of the game.
Marion did find some success in the third, closing the gap to trail, 44-34. And they did manage to keep the score close throughout the fourth. But Kokomo's momentum couldn't be disrupted. The Lady Kats matched the Lady Giants, shot for shot, to produce the 56-44 final score.
Stewart led the Lady Kats in scoring with 14 points, and she added eight rebounds and five blocked shots to dominate the boards for Kokomo. Sophomore Satyra Scott added 14 points despite just playing 17 minutes. She hit 43 percent of her shots from the field and drew the attention and fouls from Marion. Stewart and Scott were responsible half of the team's points and shots taken.
Junior Amara Stroman added six points, four assists, and six rebounds in the winning effort. Senior Makaela Drake was good for eight points, and senior Avi Pollard scored seven points.
Unfortunately for the Lady Kats, the Christmas break has been a mixed bag. They competed in the Wings and Rings Holiday Tournament at Northeastern High School Dec. 27-28, prevailing in the opening round against Fort Wayne Wayne, but dropping games to host Northeastern and Lafayette Central Catholic.
Kokomo's record stands at 10-5 as they prepare to host Frankton (5-8) on Fri., Jan. 3.
