Jerry Paul, a local activist known as a champion for military veterans and their families, was honored by the National Dust Off Association on April 1, recognizing him for receiving the 2024 Congressional Gold Medal for meritorious service.

Paul was crew chief for the 498th Dust Off/Medivac Helicopter unit as part of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

The recognition came as Paul, in rapidly declining health, also was recognized by the office of Indiana Gov. Mike Braun, the City of Kokomo, and the Howard County Commissioners. Paul is currently residing in Mitchell Hall at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette, where the commendations were presented to him.

Paul is also known locally and nationally for his tireless efforts in commemorating his fellow veterans and their families, along with the many who gave their lives in defense of the country.

He spearheaded the design and installation of several monuments in Kokomo and Howard County, including a women’s military memorial, a commemoration of the sacrifices made by the families of those who served, and the ongoing maintenance and stewardship of the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located in a dedicated park along Goyer Road on the city’s east side.

In 2024, Paul was given an honor flight in a Dust Off helicopter similar to one he operated while in service to the country. That flight concluded at the veterans’ memorial, where he was recognized at the unveiling of the monument he designed to honor Opha May Johnson, a Kokomo resident and the first woman to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.
